While on stage at the Reading Festival, Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Flea yelled from the stage

“Sheffield United beat the f*** out of West Brom today. Go Blades! I’m just caught up in the Blades fever!”

For those of you that are looking around blankly, wondering if all those years of socks n’ drugs n’ rock’ n’ roll have finally take their toll, Sheffield United are a football (or soccer if you prefer…) team Read the rest of this entry »

I am not a Manchester Untied fan, but one thing they do very well is to stand by their players if they do ‘the right thing’. As soon as Fergie gets wind of anything like dissent or over-stepping the mark, you are gone - Beckham and, although I think he was going to go anyway, Keane spring immediately to mind. Norman Whiteside has been quoted many times as feeling he was unfairly discarded, but quite simply he was from the days when booze ruled the United dressing room, Fergie cleared that out and anyone else he felt was a bad influence and you can’t really argue with his record can you!

On the flip side we have seen how much patience he has with players that he regards as a) good and b) having the right attitude. Read the rest of this entry »

A quick update, it appears that the problem stems from a dubious patent infringement claim. Bodog, not being a US company, did not respond to it as they felt it was outside the juristiction of the court, so the judge awarded the name to the patent holder

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

So, Bodog are having some ‘issues’ with the Bodog.com name. According to their release there is a legal issue around the ownership affecting them. They really are not having too much luck over the last year or so, I mean who would have thought that after sponsoring lasy year’s World Series of Poker winner, Jamie Gold, you would get so much negative publicity….who said there is no such thing as bad publicity ;-)

Good luck to them though, I honestly hope they sort it out soon. I live in the UK where we can play poker online Read the rest of this entry »

It’s good to see that wherever you go in the world those nice sports stars do a great job of driving like we do when we get behind the wheel of our Lamborghinis. The only difference is that when we get to drive a Lambo we are playing Grand Theft Auto. However, like me, I am sure you drive carefully in GTA too, stopping at all stop signs, letting old ladies cross the road, just like Lance Briggs does in real life, so when a Black Lambo registered to an NFL Linebacker appears wrapped around a telegraph pole one night with no driver or any theft filed, there must be a sensible explanation? I was sitting up the other night, as I have a habit of doing, and found that Channel 5 had the coverage of the MLS, so I thought I would sit around and watch it (this is the reason I can’t let myself get Sky Sports, I would find myself watching something pointless like Getafe vs Osasuna for no reason other than it’s on….) and the thing that struck me the most was not the standard of play, but the coverage…..it was terrible! The director seemed to think that we wanted to zoom in on whoever had the ball….who would then immediately not have the ball….so he’s quickly check, change camera and once again miss the ball. Finally he found the button marked ‘long range view’ and I thought to myself , ‘finally’ when he stuck on a replay of someone making a little drag-back. OK so it’s a nice little bit of skill, but I actually want to watch the game.

I remember this from when I lived over there, I found it really hard to watch American sports coverage. The only game I could muster up any kind of affection for was basketball, but there were so many stops and starts in the game, which the producer would fill with little bits of replays. Now these look very pretty but, if we have to keep stopping, I would much rather find out what is going on, what are the coaches saying, why is so-and-so being subbed? Ahhh, after the joys of watching some non-league football and sampling the ‘joys’ of the half time pies, it’s good to see that even those far better qualified can make the odd mistake. According to this story several people, including a few players, were hit by a nasty dose of food poisoning at a party at Norwich FC. Now for those of you that don’t know, the famous TV chef, Delia Smith, is a director there and normally her company does the catering, but this time they thought it would be a good idea to farm it out to another company to allow her staff to enjoy the party. Hmmm, well that was lucky….or not depending on how much you like being doubled over a toilet bowl

I liked this story reported on http://www.4thegame.com -

And finally, some wishful thinking by Manchester City striker Rolando Bianchi when he turned up at Carrington to start training with his new team-mates on Saturday. Unfortunately, he was soon informed that he doesn’t actually play for Manchester United and was directed to City’s training ground just down the road. Nice try Rolando…

Over the weekend I went to watch a slightly unusual friendly footy match between AFC Wimbledon and FC United - both clubs set up by fans when Wimbledon (now MK Dons) and Manchester United alienated them (if you don’t know the stories, go Google it) There has been a strong link between the clubs after AFC gave the FC guys help when they were setting themselves up, so the friendly was essentially a ‘Thank you’. This shone through from the fans, partly as this was a symbol of solidarity and partly as my mate, a former Man United FC supporter, put it ‘This is like playing in the Champion’s League for us, we don’t normally get any further south than Stoke’. I read the story about Manchester United signing a 9 year old from Brisbane with a bit of sadness. As was ponted out here there have been a lot of youngsters that have shown promise but not lived up to it. Manchester United claim they have not broken the rules in any way and I am sure they have followed the rules. The problem is that you are now seeing the pushy parent syndrome kicking in and moving the whole family thousands of miles to be within the catchment area for the club. Read the rest of this entry »
