After I had mentioned the Bhangra Stylee version of Thriller and the Thai jail version of Thriller, we now have the London Tube Version. The thing that made me laugh was the ‘Englishness’ of it all - everyone tried not to look, then gave a polite round of applause at the end…..ah bless!

This article made me chuckle to myself. As someone who has the ability to attract only those women that my friends affectionately call ‘nutters’ the idea of having a ‘grown-up’ sorting things out for me is actually getting to be appealing. I remember a few years ago a friend of mine from university asked his parents to arrange a marriage for him. At the time I was totally amazed as he had spent his entire time running around after blondes and now here he was asking his parents to find him someone from back in Mauritius. When I asked him he confessed “I’m just fed up with all this relationship crap. I just want one that is…you know?” “Ah yeah, yeah, I know” I said in reply, but I must admit that back then I didn’t have a clue what he was on about. However, after another false start of a relationship and another tick added onto my cynicism chart, I am now really getting to understand what he meant.

In the article they mention that the western approach to letting kids get on with sorting out their own relationships as opposed to other cultures where the parents are involved in ‘approving’ the relationship. I must admit, this is still not something I would be too happy with, I mean I can’t even agree with my parents about my choice of car and I know full well they have been less than happy with the girlfriends of mine they have met….although it must be said they probably have a point….about the girlfriends, not the cars!! Still somehow the idea of having a completely data driven approach does appeal to me. The reason? Well firstly, Read the rest of this entry »

Ever heard of Bombing Google? They way Google used to work was to associate the text around the links with the link itself, so you could actually get some idea of the context the link was in, therefore increasing it’s relevancy…or so the theory went. This meant that if you were searching for something like Baked Beans and all the links to Heinz said something like ‘Click here for Baked Beans’ you knew that there was a link between them even though there is not actually any mention of baked beans in the word ‘heinz’. This all worked beautifully until a Read the rest of this entry »

So according to the good old Beeb, Barak Obama’s extended familiy live in a small town west of London in the UK. In 1997 his half-sister got married and he came over for the wedding and was also invited along to the stag party. The first stop was the ‘Three Frogs’ pub, but after a few drinks and a change of venue to ‘The Rose’ pub things got a little more Read the rest of this entry »

The Freakonomics guys are following on with their series of watching ‘The Wire’ with a group of ex-hoods. I’m not going to spoil it, but for those who think those hoods are hard, unfeeling folk, this week’s episode really got them, proving they really are a bunch of soft-hearted, soppy luvvies…..honest!!

A friend of mine makes t-shirts for a living….now I know what you are thinking, there are tons of t-shirts out there for the likes of Led Zeppellin, The Who, The Rolling Stones and Hendrix, but these are slightly off the beaten track from the usual and cater to the…how can I put it….the music snob in us ;-)

These are the designs -

and if that doesn’t appeal, there is always this one…although we could never be seen to condone such a viewpoint ;-)

…and it obviously works, you can tell as I am about to link to it right about here….very funny though!

As a follow up to this post, in which a guy sat and watched Season 5 of The Wire with a group of thugs and ganstas to get their opinion on how true to life it really is. Well, I thought I had better point you to the follow up post. As one of the comments said, ‘Can we get commentary like this every week? This is great.’ Let’s hope so - I’ve got money on Marlo knocking off Prop Joe……

and, according to this article, it was only tied as Earth’s second warmest year….very dissappointing really! In the UK, we had no summer to speak of and my brother got married in Australia and the weather in Melbourne was, to be frank, awful! My Mum has some photos of myself and another friend trying to take photos at the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road while we could barely stand in the winds that were blowing. To give you some idea of how *&^%ing cold it was, remember these winds were straight up from the Antarctic and hitting us fill on as we stood on top of the cliffs by the ocean’s edge…..so here’s to summer 2008 ;-)
